WE BELIEVE
IN THE POWER
OF
CONNECTION

That’s why we are weaving a thread that connects
you directly with farming communities in Colombia.

You-logo

Coffee Drinkers & Lovers

We empower you to make a shift towards sustainability in the coffee trade. When you buy Hilo coffee you’re an active participant in our new system, supporting small-scale producers instead of increasing the profit of large corporations.

Small-scale
farmers

We pay small-scale farmers a stable monthly basic income that is set considering their actual costs of production. This creates economic security and sets the basis for a dignified life for these families and communities.

Education-logo

Educational
projects

We sustain projects that generate a long-term impact through the education of future generations. This helps build trust and heal the division in communities, weaving a strong social fabric.

THE WAY WE DRINK
COFFEE
IS BROKEN

In the conventional coffee trade system, the middleman
makes money while families farm intensively just
to scrape by through the year.

Unstable
income

While the price of a cup of coffee in Europe has been steadily increasing over time, in 2018 the price for farmers was at its lowest in the last 14 years. This means selling at a price that does not even cover their costs, which is typical.

Social
problems

Families have to work very long, hard hours and take a lot of risks. It is a vicious circle that generates a feeling of exploitation, and a lack of perspective about how to change the situation and provide a better future for their children.

Environmental
degradation

Every year, in the world, the equivalent of 140,000 football fields is turned over to new coffee plantations. The soil in which coffee grows is poor of fertility… of life. All that to meet our insatiable demand, and compensate for low prices with large quantities.

THE WAY WE DRINK
COFFEE IS
BROKEN

In the conventional coffee trade system, the middleman makes money while families farm intensively just to scrape by through the year

Unstable  income

While we pay 15 – 30 euros per kilo for our specialty coffee, the families growing it only earn 50cents from his amount.

Environmental degradation

Every year the equivalent of 140,000 football fields are turned over to new coffee plantations.

Social problems

Farmers have overwork, often bringing their children to help. Illiteracy, for example, is something that happens in these communities.
